Based upon the Lack of Response to my question, I would give "0" Stars. Unit uses and enormous amount of water during the daily charge exceeding what the specifications! Very sad. Do Not Buy!

We live in an area which has hard water ...lots of cholrine. Even after boiling the water would taste different .. as if oil mixed in water. Invested in GE water softener since last three months and very happy with outcome. Its a blessing in disguise... no more boiling water , drinking water tastes great & even clothes wash comes out cleaner & more fresh .Also, machine is white in color ... compact design and blends in ; in my utility areas with white washer / dryer.

It took me a while to do the study about how to choose a good water softener and understand the chain of water treatment process from filter to softener to RO. My old Kenmore model was left by previous homeowner without proper functionality for many years. During my search for a good water softener, I met different recommendations in different shoping places turning out to be either very cheap or extremely expensive ($3000 to 6000 including instalation fee etc.). In the end, I chose GE GXMH3101 based on its unique features including water softener and filter in One, blending adjusting knob (this is especially attractive to me because it can let you decide what hardness you want you water to be treated.) as well as its white color perfectly fit for any house hold for aethetics. Another most important feature which is really helpful for me is that this model has 100% adaptability to my old version of Kenmore. I installed myself easily to just replace the old kenmore and connect the new GE model without any problems. All the bypass valve, installation adaptors, dementions are the same as the parts of Kenmore (I guess maybe this is the best strategy by GE as a marketing to REPLACE Kenmore populoar years ago! What a smart strategy!). Our family can feel almost immediate experience in shower. The water is very slippery contrast to my previous very sticky feelings. My hair is easy to comb and slippery. From self-installment to customer experience, I feel very good so far. One thing I just want to point out that GE should have a clear description of how much salt be stored in the salt tank for beginners. It only says at least a quarter of the salt tank be filled but we do not know how much should be the best level for the first time. Should I store 230 lbs in full or should I put half of 230 capacity? I felt confused when I first put salt in the tank. The other thing was that when I received the model from Amazon, the resin bed tank was displaced from the normal position. The bottom of the resin bed tank is inclined to the corner of the salt tank. It took me a lot of time and labor to make the resin bed tank back to its normal position. Luckily enough, the device operated normaly so far. I was concerned that the displacement of the resin bed tank could have caused damage to the tank neck and may have caused leakage. (GE customer service, please add on a description about what is normal position of the resin bed tank and whether the neck was installed already or not.) In general, this is a great family product for water softening.

The set up was easy and straightforward. We ran i to a few snags with murky water at the 7 mark on the I side, but after rinsing all the know culprits and a few manual recharging sets, right back to good. Plenty of support videos on YouTube by other customers. No spots on dishes anymore. We still have a bad taste in our water but I believe it's because we live on the aquifer and nothing to do with the softener itself. The only area I think GE could really step this up would be videos of self help on the website and attached to the product number.

I installed this softener about a year ago. Since installation, our water has been much softer. The unit has been mostly maintenance free, and any maintenance required was because of how I installed it, not because the softener needed it. I recently rerouted the drain lines into a PVC line with a nipple etc. This allows for a little bit more robust setup, as the rubber lines can get squished when we stack things around the device.
All in all, it is a tremendous value, and I highly recommend!

I've only had this for a week, but it works, and installed ok... EXCEPT... it only came with two large plastic clips, and you need four to install. The parts list even shows four, but it only came with TWO; major pain to get two more.

We were considering a few higher priced units to replace a Culligan softener that went bad. Then we found this one for less than half the cost of the others. Decided to give it a try and we were pleasantly surprised. I was able to install it and set it up by myself using the well written intruction booklet in under one hour. Works like a charm. Every bit as good (if not better) than the Culligan it replaced.

Purchased new from Home Depot installed fine started seeing black rocks like coal from a filter in all my plumbing toilets sinks showers everywhere then we found out GE has been having issues with this new product. Very upset they are allowing to sell this product knowing it's defective going to cost me more than the softener is worth to have plumber flush all my lines did I mention it's a brand new home NOT HAPPY

This review is just to say that we received a used or returned softener. The box looked new and we were excited to install a water softener. When we opened the box, we noticed that there were some parts already installed and other connector and parts bag missing. This clearly showed that someone had tried to install it and GE didn't even have the inspection before they just pasted the rejected/returned/damaged item to new customer. Looks like ordering from the GE store is no more loyalty. How do we expect a reputed company like GE to build the trust and keep the image.

The water softener is great, I like the fact that it has in built sediment filter which does not need any maintenance or filter change, it uses very less salt for the family of four. We could see the quality of water difference on our glass doors and skin/hair, instructions were clear and it took little less than 2 hours to fully install and start using. Definitely recommend this GE Water softener with filter for home use.
